Is My Headache TMD Related?

Having a headache can be a real pain. The good news is that most resolve themselves within a few hours to a few days. Unfortunately, however, for some people they don’t go away so easily, especially when they’re related to a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Here’s how you can tell if your headache may be due to this condition and how treating your TMD can make it go away.

What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)?

Your temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull and allows you to open and close your mouth to eat and speak. Unfortunately, sometimes it becomes worn or misaligned, causing pain and stiffness in the jaw. This can lead to a variety of side effects including a clicking and popping sound when you open your mouth, neck, back and shoulder pain, ear ringing (tinnitus) as well as migraines and other headaches.

What do TMD headaches feel like?

You may be wondering how to tell the difference between TMD headache and any other kind. One of the most common indicators that yours is TMD related is that these typically occur more frequently than others, and usually in one or more areas in the head. They may also be experienced alongside facial pain or tightness, and jaw clicking, popping, or stiffness.

How do you treat TMD headaches?

There are several ways your dentist might be able to treat your TMD. For some, equilibration may be effective. This is when your dentist adjusts your restorations and/or reshapes teeth that may not fit well together. This brings the jaw back into proper alignment and can eliminate pain and headaches.

Another option is an occlusal splint. These are used if your TMD is caused by bruxism (teeth grinding) and can help to reduce the muscle tension in your face, thereby lessening it in your jaw while reducing your risk of developing painful TMJ-related headaches.

Other ways to alleviate TMD headache pain

In addition to treatment for your TMD from your dentist, you can also try the following tips to reduce pain in your jaw and head:

  • Over the counter pain relievers.
  • Warm compresses to the jaw.
  • Avoid foods that are tough, crunchy, or very chewy.

If you find yourself experiencing frequent headaches and/or jaw pain, don’t suffer needlessly. Speak to your dentist today about the many amazing benefits of TMD treatment, and how it can reduce your risk of painful headaches.
